Bar tending & serving both have an expiration date! part 1

Hi, this is my public service to all my fellow service industry brothers and sisters! So, If you don’t work in the service industry this post is not for you. Are they gone? good.

Here’s a little secret, after years of serving food to people who complain at the drop of a hat and think that because they’re spending $8 on a hamburger they can treat you like crap I’ve finally had it! They weren’t all bad but the ones that were just kind of ruined it for everyone else! I hate, above all other people in the world, even Kony, I hate people who complain at restaurants!

If you don’t want pink in the middle of your burger than order it well done! Split checks? You know what you ordered, do some math! Split checks are for break up dates! Not tipping me because your half full pepsi didn’t get filled back up to the brim, Fuck off!

I became so combative at the end of my restaurant manager career It was pretty clear that I needed a change. So, I started opening businesses for people. This is where you come in.

This is your life, No one else’s! Its time to stop working when someone else tells you to work and stop making how much they tell you to make. What would be the first thing you did tomorrow if you had more money than you needed and time to do anything you wanted? But first we have to deal with a couple issues.

You’ve most likely thought of or even dreamed of opening your own business but you don’t know where to start.

First, let me ask you this. Can you bake a cake? Not from scratch, but from simple 3 or 4 step directions on the betty crocker box? Of course you can! Imagine how crappy your birthday would be if everyone tried to reinvent the process of baking a cake every time you wanted cake! What I’m saying is there are tried and true recipes for opening small businesses. You just have to figure out what has worked and what is just theory or crap made up to sell books!

And 2nd, just like most people you automatically think that you don’t have money to open a business! My friends, family and employees always seem to have an idea for a business that they would like to open. I always say “thats great! how much will it cost to open?” and in the last 12 years, I’ve never got a straight answer! I don’t care that they don’t know, I care that they don’t try! a pen, paper and some fourth grade math will get you in the ballpark. Knowing this number is more important than anything else in their lives financially! A friend of mine wanted to open a small clothing store and told me it would cost “about $175,000!” after a five minute conversation, a pen and a napkin. We determined that she would most likely need about $22,000.

We figured a 1,200 sqft location at about $1.50 a foot. First months rent and one month security. Comes out to $3,600. about $500 in licensing, $6,000 for interior decor and shelving, $500 for office supplies, $1,500 for signage, $3,000 for labor $5,000 for inventory and about $1,900 for marketing!

Still don’t think you can manage to do what millions of people have done before you? Well, think of the alternative.

  • Go back to school? High tuition prices and zero guarantee it will have any effect on your life. I’ve had several employees with degrees work for me as bussers, servers and bartenders.
  • Stay in the service industry? It may not be legal but there is a shelf life for bartenders and servers, unless you go to caesars palace where you can cocktail into your 60’s! ah, the union. Either way, you’re still left out in the cold when it comes to retiring with the hope of anything more than just surviving.
to be continued...
